Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and the object of a sentence are the same person.
Study the sentences below:
- Brad Pitt is looking at himself in the mirror.
- No one helped me choose the dress, I did it myself. (I did it on my own, independently).
- Students, please behave yourselves!
Singular Reflexive Pronouns:
First person - myself
Second person - yourself
Third person - himself / herself / itself
Plural Reflexive pronouns:
First person - ourselves
Second person - yourselves
Third person - themselves
MIND THE TRAP!!
Study the following sentence:
Mary is combing her hair. not Mary is brushing herself.
In English, verbs such as comb, brush, shave, wash do not take reflexive pronouns.
